A frequent contributor to the fashion pages of cutting‑edge magazines, he turns his lens on the Nigerian capital Lagos, weaving an imagined narrative that brings together political and social issues of paramount importance to him – sexuality, gender fluidity, non‑conformity, political corruption, and religious fervor – all sheathed in an ornamental veneer liable to crack under the slightest pressure. Daniel Obasi was born in the city of Aba, southeast of Lagos, in 1994. Following an internship with the stylist Funmi Fagbemi, he worked for the magazines Ours and Fashion Business Africa before moving into photography. He first attracted wide attention with a series in the magazine Oxosi, and went on to create campaigns and lookbooks for local brands, but it was his work with Beyoncé on the musical film and visual album Black Is King (2020) that brought him international acclaim.
